It is quite evident throughout Markus Zuzak’s novel, that books are a source of great knowledge that can help people find a passion among them. Originally beginning as a shy and timid character, Liesel’s curiosity for words that lay among the book, helped her solidify her feelings for her loved ones such as her father Hans, her mother Rosa, her friend Rudy and Max. The power of words helps Liesel find courage and strength even through dark times. In the novel, Liesel Meminger recognizes the power of Adolf Hitler’s words, as it always bothered her.  Hans Jr.’s desertion from his family was a result of the negative impact of words on an individual. Thus proving that knowledge also has the capability of being used for un-righteous intentions. Hitler’s failure to understand the true meaning of words should be a lesson for us to use the knowledge we have for righteous purposes.
