The Righteous of books

Liesel first starts off as a very shy girl, with a lot of potential for success. Her love for books is first exposed when she steals The Grave-Diggers Handbook. Death, the main narrator of this book notes,

"As for the girl, there was a sudden desire to read it that

she didn't even attempt to understand. On some level, perhaps she wanted to make sure her brother was buried right. Whatever the reason, her hunger to read that book was as intense as any ten-year-old human could experience (66).” This shows that Liesel has a sense of curiosity, a trait among many avid readers. Liesel identifies the power of words in Hitler’s speech, which very much bothers her while on the train. As she arrives at her foster home, her relationship with her father Hans Hubermann is immediately foreshadowed, as both would gradually form a strong relationship starting from the words of a book. Hans begins tutoring Liesel after he finds out about The Grave- Diggers Handbook she possesses. While learning, Liesel is very curious as she wonders about words such as “Kommunist”, a word that often relates to her biological father.

This was the first book that

Liesel stole which lay

on her brothers grave.

"The power of words helped nourish Liesel’s character by helping her attain a new personality, and courage to stand up for what she believes in."
