A young girl and main protaginist of the novel, who is sent to a foster home to survive the upcoming atrocities of WW2. Liesel learns the power of words and how they helped shape her life. She steals a book from a Nazi bonfire, earning her "the book thief" nickname.
Foster mother to Liesel Meminger. She is originally seen by Liesel as
strict woman who frequently likes to cuss. Nevertheless, her love for her daughter is very strong. She ultimately dies in an airstrike.

Foster father to Liesel Meminger. He helped Liesel understand the power of books, by teaching her to read and write in their basement.He ultimately dies in the airstrike.
